EWR AND TV PRODUCTION COMPANY URBAN BREW STUDIOS PARTNER FOR CENTENARY RACE TO THE SOUTH POLE
Ultra-endurance pioneers Extreme World Races are delighted to announce Johannesburg-based production company, Urban Brew Studios, as film and media production partners for the toughest endurance race on the planet, the Centenary Race to the South Pole, due to start in December this year.
One hundred years ago, Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen beat fellow explorer Robert Falcon Scott in a race to be the first man to reach the South Pole. Arriving 35 days after Amundsen, Scott and his team perished on their way back, whilst Amundsen returned to his native Norway a hero. Extreme World Races are providing the unique chance for 16 brave competitors from six nations to relive this iconic duel, and Urban Brew Studios will be producing a four-part documentary series, entitled Cold Sweat, to cover the epic event.
EWR are famous for organising races and events in the world’s toughest environments that capture the imagination of millions, such as BBC’s On Thin Ice Series and Top Gear’s Polar Challenge; the Centenary Race to the South Pole is set to be the most challenging and exciting yet..
Serving as a fitting centenary celebration of Amundsen and Scott’s first momentous encounter, Cold Sweat , while covering the race will, more significantly, pay tribute to the power of the human spirit and explore the ever-increasing pressures facing the Antarctic today: this is a race between the continent and time – Global Warming; a race between the environment and humans – Survival; a race between fear and bravery – The Human Spirit; a race between reason and passion – The Human Condition; and a race between individuals – The Human Need for Competition.
Cold Sweat will focus on the very personal journeys of two South African competitors, braving the unknown, tempting fate, and making history at the end of the world.
As they follow in the footsteps of previous Antarctic explorers, they will reflect on those who made it out alive, and contemplate the stories of heroism of those who didn’t. This is undoubtedly going to be an exercise in extreme endurance; only for the serious explorer that craves the call of the wild; who is willing to put life and limb at nature’s mercy in a quest to be the bravest and the best.
Tony Martin, CEO of Extreme World Races, comments: "We’re delighted to be partnering with Urban Brew Studios. Having most recently worked with the BBC in the UK for the ‘On Thin Ice’ series and ZDF and ODF in the German and Austrian TV market for the last South Pole Race, this represents the next exciting step for Extreme World Races in creating innovative new TV formats for a global market. The Centenary Race to the South Pole is just the beginning as we look to combine our logistics expertise with Urban Brew Studios' TV pedigree.”
Danie Ferreira, executive producer at Urban Brew Studios, says "Cold Sweat will give viewers the precious opportunity to experience the extraordinary achievements of extraordinary people; to partake in both the pain and the glory; to feel the pride and the joy; and to marvel at the momentous".

Prince William Backs ‘Team Centrepoint’ on EWR ‘Centenary Race to the South Pole’
Team Centrepoint to raise £250k for homeless young people on ‘the toughest endurance race on Earth’
HRH Prince William of Wales has dedicated his support to British team, ‘Team Centrepoint’, attempting the Extreme World Races Centenary Race to the South Pole later this year.
Team Centrepoint and competitors from across the globe will face immense hardships in what Prince William describes as “the toughest endurance race on earth”.
On 14th December 2011, 100 years to the day since Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen beat Captain Robert Falcon Scott in their epic duel to the South Pole, Ben Boyne, 32, Andrew Carnie, 36, and Jason Bolton, 33, are bound for one of the harshest environments on the planet.
The toughest race to support the toughest challenges faced by homeless young people, the vital funds raised by Team Centrepoint will have an enormous impact on the homeless young people Centrepoint supports, who have faced their own tough challenges. Young people come to Centrepoint because of family breakdown, abuse and neglect among other issues. Centrepoint’s proven Support & Development approach offers young people a long term solution to turn their back on homelessness. Youth homelessness remains a major, unseen problem which 80,000 young people in the UK experience each year.

See the message from Prince William here:

Transcript of HRH Prince William’s message:
“Being Patron of Centrepoint is an extremely rewarding experience and each year I am overwhelmed by the lengths individuals go to support the charities vital work. There is no better example of the dedication of Centrepoint supporters than the entry of a Centrepoint team into the 2011 South Pole Race. The South Pole Race is arguably the toughest endurance race on earth. The team, consisting of Andrew Carnie, Jason Bolton and Ben Boyne, will be going up against international polar experts and explorers in an attempt to win this gruelling contest. This race marks the Centenary of Scott and Amundsen’s journey and the team will be following in their footsteps, pulling 70 kg of kit for 16 hours a day over 6 weeks. Andrew, Jason and Ben will have to endure temperatures as low as minus 50 degrees. It is for good reason that the Antarctic is recognised as being one of the most punishing and inhospitable environments in the world. Team Centrepoint’s goal is to raise £250,000, providing vital finds for the charity’s work. Centrepoint supports over 800 homeless young people every day providing a safe haven from away from the harsh reality of life on the streets. More than that, Centrepoint gives hope to devastated young lives, helping them stay off the streets for good. From counselling to dealing with the reasons why these young people became homeless in the first place, to helping them back into education, training and employment, Centrepoint gives young people the encouragement they need to believe in themselves and look forward to a brighter future. Team Centrepoint’s commitment to such a gruelling challenge is an inspiration to all and I urge you to support them. Most importantly, by supporting Team Centrepoint, you will be helping young people when they need it most. I would like to wish the team the very best of luck”.

New Arctic Trucks 6x6 Hilux off-roader created for world’s toughest race
Ultimate Arctic Trucks AT44 6x6 Hilux to be tested to limits in Antarctica for Historic EWR Centenary Race to the South Pole

Arctic Trucks AT44 6x6
Since 1990, Arctic Trucks have been the world’s leading extreme terrain modification specialists and their 4x4 Hilux has featured in some of the most incredible journeys undertaken in recent years. However, a very special and historic event – the EWR Centenary Race to the South Pole - has required Arctic Trucks to create the all-new AT44 6x6.
With 44 inch tyres, higher load capacity and improved towing ability, extra-large deck for carrying support teams and the extensive equipment required for the competitor’s survival, the AT44 6x6 is now the ultimate off-roader and the only vehicle capable of performing in the world’s last great wilderness.
The hotly anticipated AT44 6x6 Hilux will be tested to its absolute limits in the world’s highest, driest and coldest desert when, on 14th December 2011, 100 years to the day since Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen beat Captain Robert Falcon Scott in their epic duel to the South Pole, the EWR Scott/Amundsen Centenary Race to the South Pole will begin.
Negotiating multiple crevasses, crossing snow bridges and rising to over 3000 metres above sea level, facing winds of up to 80mph and withstanding temperatures as low as -56C: these are just a few of the challenges on offer in the ultimate off-road test on the EWR Centenary Race to the South Pole. Extra large 400 litre fuel tanks and capacity for 8 x 200 litre fuel barrels create an unprecedented driving range, allowing unsupported travel to the South Pole. With substantially more traction, the 6x6 will have greater pulling capacity in difficult conditions. The new drive line of the 6x6 has been designed to keep the exceptional reliability Arctic Trucks are famous for, tested on many successful expeditions to the toughest environments on the planet.
Emil Grimsson of Arctic Trucks;“Creating the 6x6 has been our biggest challenge to date and we are excited by the prospect of being a part of such a momentous event. This is a huge step forward in off-road engineering and will allow us to provide the best possible support for the brave competitors.”
