Dear Friend,

800km for £800,000 in the toughest race on the planet

On the Centenary of Sir Robert Falcon Scott’s iconic trek to the South Pole, we three souls, Gavin Moran, Frank Runge and James Raaff are undertaking the trip of a lifetime for the cause of a lifetime.

What’s our goal? To raise £800,000 by racing 800km in the toughest race on the planet.  (OK, the distance is actually 778 km but that doesn’t have quite the same ring to it!).

Bottom line, that’s £100 for every 1km we cover in temperatures of -50°C and winds of up to 80mph. But if we succeed we can all help dramatically improve the lives of over 1,000 young people.

It’s not going to be easy.  We need your help, your love, your compassion and of course your money!

Why are we racing?  To support fantastic international charity ‘Keep A Child Alive’. Their mission is simple: to provide treatment, love and support to families affected by HIV/AIDS.  Every £3,000 raised provides a year’s worth of food, clothing, shelter, education and loving care for five households.

Who are we?  Some of you may know us from our previously calmer days, but in case not, read below to get the full lowdown.

How do you give? It’s simple, go to www.justgiving.com/kacateam  or text KACA99 followed by the £ amount e.g. KACA99 £100 to 70070.

What’s the ‘Centenary Race to the South Pole’ 2011/2?  100 years on from Scott and Amundsen's epic duel, the ‘Centenary Race to the South Pole’ is the toughest endurance race on the planet. In a snapshot, it is the ultimate extreme endurance event, set in one of the coldest, driest, and highest deserts on earth.

When is it?  Starting from the frozen coastline of Novo, Antarctica on New Years Day 2012, we will be racing against five other teams, negotiating multiple crevasses, crossing snow bridges of up to 3,000m and just trying to stay alive as we race to be first to the pole.

How do you stay involved? Follow our progress and hear all our latest news at: www.extremeworldraces.com.

Thank you for supporting Team Keep A Child Alive!

Gavin Moran

After 20 successful years working in the commodity business I am currently enjoying the fruits of my labour and running a vineyard in France with my wife Kelley and our sons Finn, Gus and Farley. Over the years I have somehow managed to maintain a high level of fitness and competitive drive. Although some may say competing with the locals during the annual harvest and trying to coax the maximum speed out of my tractors is a challenge, the prospect of entering this race with valued team mates captured my imagination, allowing to better satisfy my drive for competition and fun! We are all immensely proud to undertake such a challenge on behalf of 'Keep A Child Alive', an organisation we have long been touched by. We are honoured that hopefully our endeavours will in turn touch many.

Frank Runge

I've led a full life formerly working in the commodity business and enjoying the labours of my fruit, literally. However after taking semi-retirement to the delightful backdrop of Hampstead, I felt strongly about wanting to use my success for good effect. Getting immediately bored with a leisurely lifestyle and with no desire to play rounds of golf, I am currently investing in a wide range of projects that directly and indirectly create social wealth for different communities globally. A lover of challenges, I found this race from the TV series "On Thin Ice" and with a wish to merge all my passions, I'm looking forward to giving it my best for a cause I'm passionate about (aside from Chelsea that is!)

James Raaff

I am a Registered Biokineticist (medical exercise rehabilitation specialist) based in Cape Town, South Africa but spending a large amount of my time travelling and working with all nationalities and families and individuals with specific needs. Now after investing over 10 years at university studying exercise physiology, biomechanics and natural medicine, I have a great opportunity with EWR, to explore some extreme limits of the mind-body. My 'Keep A Child Alive' Team-mates, Gavin and Frank, are both great friends and the best examples of mind-over-matter I have yet encountered. I have that feeling in my gut that we are about to do something very important and that it will transform our lives in many positive ways. I usually say "I'd rather be surfing" but this summer, I have another challenge
